This hands-on class taught by food photographer Fran Flynn will teach you some of the tricks and techniques to enhance your food photography and styling for photography. You will also gain experience in shooting on location followed by lunch on Day 2.

This hands-on class run by prominent food photographer, Fran Flynn will cover natural light food photography techniques, image styling and social media.

Food and styling props will be provided.

Students should be able to shoot at least 6 editorial quality photo images to take away with them for their own personal use (blogs, websites, Instagram)

A CordonTec Certificate of Attendance will be issued to all participants.

This course is perfect for:

  • Food enthusiasts wishing to improve their food photography skills;
  • Individuals wanting to understand techniques for taking food images using natural light;
  • Individuals wanting to learn basic techniques for editing food images;
  • Individuals working in small food/hospitality/culinary businesses looking to do their own social media;
  • Social media/Bloggers wanting to learn more about for food photography.

Student Requirements

Students must bring a DSLR, or SLR. A simple point and shoot camera (or iPhone) will not suffice. Please also bring or borrow a tripod, and laptop for viewing your images. Preferable for laptop to have editing programs Lightroom or Camera RAW and/or Photoshop. All other equipment will be provided.

NB: An assumption of Photography Basics will be expected ie shutter speeds and camera setups will not be covered.

Tuition: AUD 675.00

Duration: 2 days

Day 1 Tuesday 6 February 2018 (9am – 4pm)

  • Commences at 9.00am – Meet time 8.30-9.00AM – the workshop is scheduled to commence from 9.00am sharp concluding around 4.00pm.
  • Please meet the workshop tutor at the Le Cordon Bleu Melbourne Culinary Arts Institute entrance.
  • Ensure you bring along a laptop with Lightroom for the image editing session.
  • Lunch is not provided on Day 1 and there are limited dining options on campus.

SESSION 1:

At-home shooting – using available props for managing light and selecting best location/setup.

Using natural light techniques in food photography & image styling; explore objects and surfaces, shape and form, light and shade: direct and indirect ligh

Practical exercise: using the techniques learnt above, create, style and shoot a still life

 

SESSION 2:

Conception, organisation and realization: examine different photographic approaches.

Choosing angle of shot, image composition guidelines, managing food preparation,
props and backdrops. How do the professionals do it.

Practical exercise: using the techniques learnt above, create, style and shoot 2 x dishes

LUNCH (30 minute break)

SESSION 3:

Intro to editing and post production

 

Day 2 Wednesday 7 February 2018 (9am – 1pm)

  • Commences at 9.00am – Meet time 8.45-9.00AM – the workshop is scheduled to commence from 9.00am sharp concluding around 11:30am.
  • Please meet the workshop tutor at the hotel entrance.
  • A Certificate of Attendance will be presented to participants at 11:30pm.
  • Lunch will be a 2 course lunch with wine. Lunch will conclude at 1pm.
  • Please advise in advance any dietary requirements.

RESTAURANT

9am – Coffee on arrival

9am – 1pm

Restaurant environment – on-location photoshoot – food photography and styling

Exposure to photographing in a ‘live’ Chefs kitchen including food prep images and suggesting for process of communicating with Chef

Practical exercise:

Shoot food/environment and people in a restaurant environment

Trouble shooting + critique of images

Students will be provided with a variety of dishes (meat, fish, vegetables, breads, cheeses and desserts) throughout the photoshoot.

4 different dishes to shoot

Shooting with different textures (wood/ marble) and food styling props

Access to a waiter to direct (10am – 11am)

11am – 1pm Graduation Lunch – 2 course menu with wine.
